Fishing in Autumn - Just Another Drunkards Dream

In Drinking Alone, Du Mu,
a celebrated Tang Dynasty poet writes,

Outside my window the snow and wind blows hard,
So I clutch the stove and open yet another flask of wine.

And like a fishing boat in the rain

On this autumn eve, I sail down ...

Asleep on a rolling river.

Like a Fishing Boat in the Rain

Born in 803 A.D. in the ancient city of Chang'an, Du Mu was the grandson of the distinguished historian Du You.

Renowned for his unique form of sensual poetry Du Mu lived in an era known for its political intrigue. His frustration with the politics of his day did however not go unheard.

Du Mu's poetry, letters and essays often expressed the serious grievances of many of the people of his day.

And like many others who may have suffered a similar fate, although he passed the Jinshi exam at the age of twenty-five he never went on to achieve a high rank.

It is generally believed that Du Mu's political career was cut short as rebel leaders failed in their attempt to overthrow the emperor's court of eunuchs thereby triggering a staggering backlash.

Despite his political failings, Du Mu did however succeed in making his mark upon Chinese poetry.
A review of Du Mu's work reveals an uncommon ability to describe the natural elements that stimulate the human mind.

To accentuate his affect, in this particular poem, crisp cutting images are introduced to demonstrate the sensual side of life.

But in an assessment of his work, ... some may say that reading Du Mu is no ordinary walk in the park.

A stroll down memory lane may invigorate the soul .... and perhaps, it may make every little hair stand on end.
